Hartshorne Park is one of many parks in the Monmouth County Parks system. In particular it encompases and old Nike Missle and Coastal Defense property that was abandoned by the Government and handed over to the Parks System. I would call this one of the jewels in the Monmouth system because it has such a wide variety of trails and serves both the hiking and biking crowd during supporting weather as well as a decent winter support if the weather cooperates. Good elevation gain, scenic river vista, and a variety of trees including Holly and Poplar as well as some Tulip. There is an ongoing invasive species effort going on to reclaim various parts of the park from smothering vegetation that has a bit of a sour look to it, but overall I view it has good for the park. There are 3 main access points: Rocky Point up high, Buttermilk Valley and Clay Pit Creek lower down. Don't let the elevation bother you as you never get higher than about 300' above sea level.
